Judy Chicago proclaimed, “You shouldn’t have to justify your work.” Following this proclamation, Transylvanian born and Milan based painter Ribana Szutor explores the delicate balance between abstraction and reality. Through her neo-geometric figurative paintings, Ms. Szutor redefines how we envision the human form through a combination of oil painting and acrylic resin technique.
Proudly disregarding traditional principles and expectations of fine art, Ms. Szutor’s figures explore a free combination of colors, imagination, and visceral narratives. Experimenting with color, texture, and imagery, Ms. Szutor unabashedly breaks from conventional artistic guidelines to establish a world colored with what she describes as “latent eroticism, lack of convention, and playfulness.” Governed by dualities, her black and white figures and juxtaposed with strong, spontaneous bursts of color integrated into the forms or paint drips adding depth and dimensionality.
Ranging from subtle sweeps of blue to generous and thick applications of orange, Ms. Szutor’s implementation of intense pigments highlights her adventurous spirit and adoration for the unanticipated. With instantly recognizable style, Ribana Szutor’s compositions fuse together components of high and low art, rebelling against convention and looking to newfound artistic ideals and techniques.
“A hidden romanticism emerges,” explains Ribana Szutor, as the delicate female forms emerge from the shadowed backgrounds and delicately weave into one another. Driven by innovation and paying homage to traditional figure studies, Ms. Szutor fearlessly embraces an individualized style that breaks from the expected. Devoted to her artistic practice, Ms. Ribana Szutor has studied music in addition to her education in painting.
Intrigued by various mediums, Ms. Szutor manifests her creativity with traditional canvas pieces as well as elaborate, yet functional, armchairs. Featured in Vogue Italia and exhibiting internationally in Monaco, Milan, Los Angeles, and New York, Ms. Szutor has made a name for herself in the contemporary art arena.
